How to Replace a Car Key

If you’ve misplaced, lost or had your car keys stolen, it can be a distressing or even frightening time.

However, if you’ve become resigned to never finding your keys, it’s important to get them replaced as soon as possible.

We’d always recommend getting in touch with a reputable locksmith if you find yourself needing to replace a car key, and our team at Lock & Key Centre has put together a handy guide outlining everything you need to know about replacement car keys.

How to replace a car key

Lost Car Keys – What To Do

Losing your car keys can be incredibly inconvenient, but there are a number of things you should do before resorting to spending money to replace them.

Firstly, retrace your steps. It may seem simple, but there is a chance that by doing this you’ll stumble upon your lost keys. Also, it’s important to keep a clear head and try not to panic when your car keys are lost. If you’re in your home, the chances are that they’ll turn up sooner or later.

If you’ve covered your tracks and still cannot find them, then check your insurance policy. Sometimes lost car keys are covered in your insurance but, if not, it’s probably time to replace them.

You can do this by visiting a franchised dealership that sells the make and model of your vehicle, but it is always going to be cheaper going directly to a locksmith. As well as being a more cost-effective option, many locksmiths can get to you a lot faster than it would take if you went via a dealership.

Stolen Car Keys – What To Do

Clearly, having your car keys stolen is a much more serious situation, and it’s likely to evoke a stronger emotional reaction, too. Again, if this occurs it’s important to remain calm. Sometimes thieves may take your car key but not steal your car – if this happens the very first thing you should do is call the police.

Once you’ve informed the authorities, there are a number of preventative measures you can take to secure your vehicle. If you do have a spare key to your car, then it’s worthwhile removing the vehicle’s spark plugs and fuses – this way the car won’t start if the thief does try to steal it.

Next, make sure it is stored in a safe place such as a garage. If you don’t own a garage, then try and block your car in so if the thief does turn up, they won’t be able to move the vehicle. Also, get in touch with a locksmith who’ll be able to provide you with a new key and deprogram the existing one, rendering it useless.

Don’t forget to get in touch with your insurance company, too. Often they have policies in place that cover car keys when they’re stolen.
